Division (intro / terms)
What is division?
Division is one of the four basic arithmetic operations, along with addition, subtraction, and multiplication. It involves splitting a number into equal parts. The result of division shows how many times the divisor fits into the dividend.
Division is simply splitting a number into equal parts.
division answers the question: "How many times does one number fit into another?"
or "How do we split something into equal parts?"
Division Terms
- Dividend: The number that is being divided.
- Example: In 12 ÷ 3 = 4, 12 is the dividend.
- Divisor: The number by which the dividend is divided.
- Example: In 12 ÷ 3 = 4, 3 is the divisor.
- Quotient: The result of the division.
- Example: In 12 ÷ 3 = 4, 4 is the quotient.
- Remainder: The amount left over when division doesn’t result in a whole number.
- Example: In 14 ÷ 4 = 3 with a remainder of 2, 2 is the remainder.
- Division Sign (÷): The symbol used to represent division.
- Fraction: Another way to represent division, where the dividend is the numerator and the divisor is the denominator.
- Example: 12 ÷ 3 is also written as 12/3.
- Long Division: A method of dividing large numbers where you divide step-by-step.
- Inverse Operation: Division is the opposite of multiplication. If you multiply the quotient by the divisor, you get back the dividend.
